Accessibility
We want Kream & Sugar to work for everyone who wants to use it, including people who use screen readers, magnification, captions, keyboard-only navigation, switch controls, or voice control. This page is an honest account of where we are: what works today, what does not yet, and how to reach a person if something blocks you.
We are measuring ourselves against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. We do not yet meet that standard everywhere. We would rather tell you exactly where we fall short than claim otherwise.
This website
The marketing site you are reading now is the part of our service in the best shape. Images carry text descriptions, the page structure is marked up so screen readers can navigate by heading, forms have labels, every page can be operated by keyboard, and a "skip to main content" link is the first thing you reach on each page.
If you have asked your device to reduce motion, this site now honors that and turns off its animations and smooth scrolling.
The app
Our app does not currently work with screen readers, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Controls in the app are missing the text labels a screen reader needs to announce them, which means someone using VoiceOver, TalkBack, NVDA or JAWS cannot navigate it. We consider this a serious gap and it is the accessibility work we are prioritizing above everything else.
We are also improving color contrast in the app's light theme, adding support for the larger text sizes your phone can request, and making sure everything can be reached without precise tapping.
The virtual café
The café is a real-time 3D space built with a game engine. There is one genuine technical limit we want to be straightforward about, and it applies only to the café, and only in a web browser.
Screen readers and the café on the web
In a web browser, screen readers cannot read content inside the café. Game engines draw to a single canvas that screen reader software cannot see into. This is a limitation of the underlying technology, not a decision we made, and it is not something we can work around on the web.
The café does work with screen readers in our phone apps. The same engine supports VoiceOver on iPhone and TalkBack on Android even though it cannot support them in a browser. If you use a screen reader and want to visit the café, please use the app rather than the website:
This limit applies to the café alone. The rest of our website and app is built with ordinary web technology and works with screen readers.
You do not have to use the café
Everything the café offers is reachable another way. You can create a profile, browse people, send and receive match requests, and message your matches without ever entering it. If you find something that is genuinely only available inside the café, please tell us, because that would be a bug in how we have built the service.
Deaf and hard of hearing
The café is built around talking to people, which excludes anyone who cannot hear it. We are adding live captions, which will work on the web as well as in the apps. Captions will be off by default and switched on from your accessibility settings.
Tell us when something blocks you
If any part of Kream & Sugar stops you from doing something, we want to hear about it, and you should not have to figure out a workaround on your own.
Email [email protected] with "Accessibility" in the subject line. Tell us what you were trying to do, what happened, and what you use to browse if you are comfortable sharing it. We aim to reply within five business days. If something is blocking you from an account action such as deleting your account or managing a subscription, say so and we will handle it for you directly rather than making you wait for a fix.
You can also reach us through our contact page.
Alternative ways to get things done
If something on the site or in the app is not usable for you, we will do it with you or for you. That includes signing up, editing your profile, changing your subscription, and deleting your account and data. Email the address above and we will arrange it.
